Installation of Solar Electricity in Tribal Village of Illupur in Tiruvallur, India

Illupur is a small village with a population of about 120 people, situated 5km from Kanakamma Chatram. Here, the lrular tribals (illiterates) have been living for 3 to 4 generations. As tribals, the people are looked down upon by the rest of the society and there are many social problems in the community.

Sisters Joanna Bruno, PBVM, San Francisco, and Elizabeth Remily, PBVM, Aberdeen traveled to the Standing Rock Reservation, scene of a sustained protest by indigenous people and water protectors against the laying of the Dakota Access Pipeline, designed to transport as many as 570,000 barrels of crude oil daily from North Dakota to Illinois. The pipeline would travel underneath the Missouri River, the primary drinking water source for the Standing Rock Sioux, a tribe of around 10,000 people.
