Presentation Sisters Across the World Celebrate 40 Years of UnionBack
Presentation Sisters in countries across the world are this week celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Union of Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1976.
The Decree of Union was given by the Vatican on 25 June 1976, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, and the Union was officially established on 19 July in the same year. It brought together Sisters from many of the autonomous houses across the world that had been established since Nano Nagle founded the Congregation in Cork in 1775.
On this 40th anniversary the Sisters celebrate the strengthening of the charism of Nano Nagle and their growth into the spirituality of being in communion, especially the Mystery of Oneness, which Union has brought over those years. The Union has grown to be a Congregation that thrives through its richness of diversity, internationality and intercultural sharing and networking to promote the mission.
With representatives in 17 countries across five continents, Presentation Sisters have shown themselves to be true frontier women … always ready to embrace new horizons.
Sisters continue to answer Nano’s call to be of service in any part of the globe. Recently, three Sisters have generously responded to the call to go on Mission to Cambodia. On 7 October next, Srs Anne Lyons (Ireland: North East Unit), Lizzy Matthew (India: North Unit) and Preethi Chacko (India: South Unit) will join the Jesuit Mission in a new school project which seeks to respond to the great educational needs of the north west of the country.
Reflecting on this special anniversary, Congregational Leader, Sister Mary Deane, said: “The world is a different place since Presentation Sisters took the brave step of fusing their independent communities into a greater whole. But the richness of diversity among our Sisters, harvesting of experiences and collaboration in carrying the flame of Nano creatively into the future has forged a wonderful collective journey for all Presentation Sisters in Union, which we will continue as pilgrim people into the future.”
She added: “We continue to celebrate our connection to Presentation Sisters in the Australian Society and American Conference who remain connected to us and celebrate our shared vision of Nano’s charism through the International Presentation Association.”
Sisters from across the world will join together to participate in a ritual marking this important event this Saturday, 25 June 2016. You can get a copy of the ritual here.
As well as the new mission in Cambodia, our Sisters work in the following countries: Antigua, Canada, Chile, Dominica, Ecuador, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Slovakia, Thailand, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
